he s bbeen a player of many years with groups such as ub40 aswad dub band ruff cutt just to name a few. he and his brother formed the band matic 16 to which the horn section is called matic horns. as a horn section they played on many reggae recordings for producers from the uk ja usa and europe. he has in resent times produced instrumentals for his own label hfp (homefront productions) that has been released 1.lucrative and 2 aba-ariginals as well as producing dub plates to the big sound systems such as aba-shanti-l channel one jah shaka and sound systems in europe. he has now taken to dub step with one of its biggest producers coki in bringing the horn to the electric digital sound with great success, new to the scene and new to both artists. this is an extension of bringing the sound of trixx to the club scene.

eli paperboy reed come and get it (2010 uk 12-track vinyl lp - having been hailed by critics and fans alike for his first album roll with you , us soul sensation eli -paperboy- reed returns with the follow-up, come and get it . the single of the same name is a blast of sheer soulful exuberance, a paean to love, lust and desire, bursting with horns, pounding drums and that sweet, sweet eli -paperboy- reed voice. it harks back to the 60 s sounds of classic motown and stax good-time recordings, the kind of floor-filler that would tear up the dancehalls of the northern soul scene across the uk).

the jungle brothers’ 1988 debut, straight out the jungle, was important for many reasons. it was sloppy and goofy but had moments of real focus and social consciousness. it was a true “kitchen sink” record, that caught a rap fanbase enraptured by eric b. & rakim, public enemy and boogie down productions a bit off-guard. also of note, beyond the excellence of the album itself, the jungle brothers were the fulcrum for what would become the native tongues movement – they came first, de la soul and a tribe called quest followed, under their guidance.

paper recording are back on vinyl with a fantastic debut 12- from italian duo soundersons, who have come up through the underground bologna house scene. can t get enough is a deep electro-funk slice of nu disco with diana g on vocals. it s got 80s synths and squelches, vocal hooks a plenty, clonking percussion, rhodes and that metro area / tom tom club vibe. parts i and ii are split in to vocal and instrumental over one side on continuous play for maximum dance floor action. on the flip, the mighty dj spinna brings his a game with a deep nyc take that is underground house at it s best. he uses synths, arps and the vocal to slowly build the remix that hits it s peak at the end. finally education finished things off with a raw disco cut up that hits the floor running and keeps going full pelt. one for the dancers.

it is making my blood boil. man, my jaw is hanging down listening to this stuff. read the email from butthole surfers man and producer, paul leary, when he heard the demo for what would become the debut philipp gorbachev & the naked man album. philipp gorbachev, the russian musician and dj, has been throwing killer parties and making some of the most innovative and exciting electronic music to come out of moscow in years. in 2014 he released his debut album silver album but when invited to perform a live boiler room he had something else in mind: a band scenario. the resulting concoction was not something locked into a 4/4 beat but rather a much more organic, groove-based sound with funk-strutting bass lines and live drums that rolled and flurried around the beats that jumped around leading the charge of the songs along with gorbachev’s damo suzuki-like vocals. taking that experiment into the studio, i dont give a snare is a wild ride that jumps genres, switches paces and alters tones frequently. the opening goodman exploding in intense rhythms and heavy, spiralling riffs that at times recall sabbath but the ever-shifting drums and gargling electronics give a wonky freshness that feels impossible to place into genre. whilst gorbachev cites a range of influences from beck to blind willie johnson as being core to him, the primary motivation is the live nature of the project itself. the main influence is the constant live experience we have as music players and performers. i want to get the most out of every party, every jam, and every dancefloor.

originally released in 1978 on greg charmichaels red greg records, ‘lady bug’ and -love bug- are probably bumblebee unlimited s most recognizable hits. now repressed on the get on down label ... with an undeniable groove, signature keys and arrangements by patrick adams in addition to the comically sped-up vocals, lady bug is considered by many to be one of the most important underground tracks of the disco era. as with the original -lady bug- 12- single, the john morales and frank trimarco -sunshine sound- mix takes the a-side of the rca release. a true disco version in every sense of the word, this almost 10 minute mix brings out the latin percussions to the front making it a true dance floor classic and establishing john morales as one of the best remixers in the industry. the b-side belongs to one of new york city s hottest djs at the time: larry levan. despite being a very early remix by the legendary paradise garage dj, the talent was evident and his understanding of a club mix in wide display. it’s no wonder larry levan would go to become one of the most respected and revered remixers of his generation.

o celebrate the 25th anniversary of ugkãs first album, get on down goes the extra mile, presenting it for the first time ever on vinyl. and 2-lp clear vinyl at that, giving the strutting, funky grooves the chance to really stretch out on your system. back in 1992, southern hip-hop was still proving to the world that it could sustain a fan base that was chiefly raised on rap from new york and la. the geto boys and 2 live crew had made strong cases by the earliest 90s, and pimp c and bun b were ready to make their own. most of the trunk-bumping bass comes from drum programs and basic sampling on these tunes in later years they would build their sound into something even fuller and deeper. self-produced with additional work from houston locals bernie bismark and shetoro henderson, the tracks here are minimal, slow and menacing, which matched their lyrical approach quite nicely. you can hear the beginnings of the groups true greatness in these early lyrical workouts ¹ several taken from the regional cassette-only ep the southern way that got them signed to jive with tales of street hustles, relationships and self-reliance in a world stacked against them. they may have been done early-on, but that doesnt mean they arent crucial to ugks legacy cases in point being the three singles: something good, a charismatic update to bill withers use me up, and pocket full of stones (the latter featured on the menace ii society soundtrack). beyond the singles, deeper cuts like iãm so bad, feels like iãm the one whos doin dope and cramping my style made it clear to the world that this crew had the attitude and charisma to make even bigger waves in the years to come.

figure 86 finds the label’s headmaster revisiting a dormant classic from 2005, delivering two extended excursions that pick up on the lunatic vibe instilled by the original while each mix provides for a uniquely new experience. sitting on the record’s a-side is the hardspace mix, a sparse and bone dry rhythmic affair, built around the originals characteristic cut-up vocal sample. a hammering thump carries along the track relentlessly, the air of oppression created only amplified by a heavy assault of clangig claps. the digital bundle comes with an even more stripped-back hardspace tool version, making it an excellent surprise to throw in and out of mixes. on the flip faki takes opportunity to show us one of his lesser known sides, taking time to gently develop this deepspace mix into a meandering meditative journey. trading in the vocal for a spaced-out synth opens the track up for the shifting tribal drums to truly work their magic and makes this piece of music feel equally mysterious as it sways with cosmic energy.
